The historic Matthew House is the former home of Uriah Matthew, partner in Matthew, McLean and Company. The company, founded in 1869, operated a Souris General Store, the Souris Harbour Wharf, a fleet of 30 fishing boats, a lobster company and a shipping operation that carried salted fish and lobster to the West Indies. As agents for the Magdalen Island Ferry runs, the Matthew, McLean Company was the key supplier to the Magdalen Island residents in the late 1800's.
This elegant restored Victorian home, built in 1885, featuring expertly
crafted woodwork, is lovingly detailed and preserved. Designated an Island
Historic Building, the Matthew House has received the Prince Edward Island
Museum and Heritage Foundation Architectural Preservation Award.
